Australia is an island continent in the South Pacific. In fact, it is the world's largest island, the world's sixth largest country, consisting of approximately 5% of the entire global land surface.

Covering more than 7.6 million square kilometers, Australia is about the same size as North America, or the equivalent of 1.5 Europe's. "The world's smallest continent and largest island", it is like nowhere else in the world.

Australia has 47,000 kilometers (29,204 miles) of coastline, more than 3000 national parks and reserves, and 11 World Heritage sites. Unbelievably only 20 million people live here, with 75% of those located in the coastal regions of the Eastern States.

Australia is young, adventurous, friendly and stylish, with an excellent climate thrown in. No wonder over 120 nationalities have migrated to Australia (many of them European), making it one of the most multicultural countries in the world. The increasingly rich cultural blend of fashions, languages and cuisines colour some of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world.

The food is light, wonderfully tasty and always fresh. Australia produces a delectable range of fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, cheeses and wines.

Wine tasting is a definite must, proving a popular weekend activity with tourists and locals. The wine districts throw several festivals a year - eating, drinking and music continue all day and deep into the night, so prepare to be decadent.

But to experience all Australia has to offer, you need to get away from the cities, the traditional icons and the tourist destinations.

Head into the rainforests to see the gum trees, wild life and an amazing array of birds. Head to the beaches and reefs to surf, swim, dive and fish. Head to the bush (the outback) to see endless skies, red dirt, odd marsupials lazing in the sun and laconic Aussie characters propping up every bar. Head to the mountains to ski and drink - and don't bother trying to keep up, as many before you have tried and failed! Head out with an Aboriginal guide to learn of their relationship with the land, their spirituality and their struggle, see their rock art - which is the oldest in the world.

Take a boat ride in one of the tropical rivers up in the Northern Territory where seven-metre crocodiles watch warily as you glide by. Try rock-climbing or abseiling, White water rafting, bungy jumping, sailing, surfing, skiing, sightseeing, ballooning, parasailing, horse riding, driving, eating, relaxing...

The list is almost as endless as your imagination.

However long you stay, it will never be enough!
