Lakes and Wilderness

Cann River is the township of the Cann Valley. The town is predominantly a timber town, with beef and diary farming. Cann River is located on the Princes Highway 5-hours east of Melbourne.

In the far eastern corner of the state (midway between Melbourne and Sydney) lies Mallacoota Inlet, a magical part of Victoriaís wilderness coast.

The jewel in the crown of national parks, Croajingolong, is precious with diverse ecosystems that envelop you in natural beauty. The national park features a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Escape in this place is perfect for nature lovers.

Croajingolong National Park, 87,500ha in size, extends for 100km along the wilderness coast of Victoria's East Gippsland. And is overflowing with remote beaches, tall forests, heathland, rainforest, estuaries and granite peaks

Things to see and do
The track network allows visitors to explore the park on short or long walks. Coastal hikers need to obtain a permit from Parks Victoria.
Rivers and inlets offer the safest swimming, but beware of strong currents near entrance area.
Fishing is permitted in the park. A Recreational Fishing Licence is required to fish the top lake of Mallacoota Inlet, Tamboon Inlet and all other inland waters.
Some of Australia's best flat-water canoeing can be found on the rivers and inlets of the park.

Coopracambra National Park is one of the most remote sections of Victoria and remains largely undisturbed. The red sandstone gorge of the Genoa River and the surrounding granite peaks form some outstanding scenery. The 35,000ha park protects high conservation values with undisturbed ecosystems, a heritage river, rare flora and fauna and diverse landscape values.

Things to see and do
A 2km drive along the W.B. Line from the Monaro Highway brings you to a short walking track to the cascading Beehive Falls. The road beyond this point becomes 4-wheel drive only. The heli-pad at Mealing Hill, adjacent to the W.B. Line, gives excellent views of the area including Mt Kaye, Yambula Peak (South East Forests National Park in NSW) and the south to the coast.

The Genoa Wilderness Area provides for self-reliant recreation. Only experienced and well-equipped hikers should undertake walks in the rugged and remote parts of this park. A ëTrip Intentionsí form needs to be lodged by hikers at the Cann River or Mallacoota Office of Parks Victoria prior to departure and parks staff notified upon return

Snowy River Country

"There was movement at the station, for the word has passed around
That the colt from old Regret had got away,
And joined the wild bush horses - he was worth a thousand pound,
So all the cracks had gathered to the fray...
(And) The man from Snowy River is a household word to-day,
And the stockmen tell the story of his ride"
AB Paterson

In Snowy River Country you can feel the spirit of one of Australia's most famous literary figures - "The Man from Snowy River". You can hear the call of the men and women of the high country and the crackle of their campfires. Journey along the trails they followed as they created the legends that have become a part of the nation's heritage.

It's a magical place where the sounds of the Snowy echo through the National Park with its spectacular deep gorges and forests of Grey Gum, Alpine Ash, Messmate and Native Pine. It's an ancient place where the people of the Gunai/Kurnai hunted.

It's a place where you can experience the past, whether you're camping out or staying in wilderness retreats. Horse ride along the trails of the cattle drovers, white water raft, or four wheel drive and tour. Restore yourself with great walks through stunning landscape including Silver Mine Walking Trail and Snowy River Nature Walk starting from McKillop's Bridge. From here you can also launch a canoe into the waters of the snowy with a promise of thrilling canoeing and rafting. At the end of a day on the river, camp on one of the gentle sloping sand bars to refresh yourself for the next day's adventure. Keep a watch for wallabies, superb lyrebirds and the azure kingfishers. You might even spot a platypus.
